In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
