The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
